What will you be doing:
The role holder will be part of the Markets Legal team in Mexico City, providing legal support to derivatives and cash trading, investment banking and corporate and commercial legal matters working with front office and infrastructure stakeholders. The role holder will provide legal counsel and regulatory advice to each area of the investment bank involved in the structuring, origination, underwriting, and distribution of equity and debt capital markets products.The role holder will also have primary legal coverage responsibilities and deliver specialized legal and regulatory support for fixed income and equities trading and investment banking, including the negotiation of local master agreements.The role holder will manage legal inquiries from these businesses and serve as subject matter expert to the legal department and participate in industry group efforts on behalf of the firm.The role holder will be an active participant in Mexican industry groups on issues relating to regulatory reform and act as an advocate for Barclays. The role holder will be instrumental in implementing regulatory reform (including, but not limited to uncleared margin, TIIE, bail-in) related to OTC derivatives subject to Mexican, UK and US regulatory regimes and will assist in responses to regulatory queries.The role holder will also provide legal advice in connection with the Barclays New Product Approval Process.The role holder will act as corporate secretary, send out board packages, attend board of directors and audit committee meetings and publish board minutes.The role holder will also ensure that the appointment of new board members is done in accordance with Mexican law.
Key Accountabilities
The role holder will work closely with senior business personnel and other stakeholders (Compliance, Tax, Finance, Reg Policy, Chief Controls OfficeRisk etc.) to manage fixed income and equities trading and capital markets offerings.The role holder will be accountable for delivering technical expertise in negotiating with counterparties, taking responsibility for legal risk management, structuring transactions, drafting legal documents, addressing regulatory developments, overseeing litigation and working with outside counsel. The role holder will manage legal requests related to investment banking and markets trading as well as corporate secretarial and commercial matters.The role holder will be responsible for being a subject matter expert on Mexican regulation and act as the legal representative at meetings with regulators.The role holder will also serve as manager to a junior attorney in the Mexico City office and will need to manage external counsel effectively and in a cost-efficient manner.
What we’re looking for:
· Law degree
· Admission to practice in Mexico
·9+ years’ experience as a derivatives, structured finance, capital markets and regulatory attorney at a large investment bank
