Job Purpose Summary
Metallurgists or Materials R&D Engineer will study the properties of metals being used in manufacturing and then apply their findings to practical applications, such as metal processing. They work with a range of metals including copper, precious metals, iron, steel, zinc and aluminum alloys. The Materials Engineer/Metallurgist will use their technical and leadership skills to advance the development of advanced materials used for suture medical devices. The engineer will apply technical principles, theories, and new concepts to collaboratively solve difficult technical problems and help develop new and innovative surgical instruments. What you will do
  • Subject Matter Expert in Materials/Metallurgy supporting advanced suture material development.
  • Specifying process equipment, manage external technology suppliers, and qualify systems.
  • Define process parameters, inspection methods, and validation requirements to ensure successful transfer of products to manufacturing.
  • Work closely with material suppliers to formulate base materials that meet product development specifications.
  • Develop test methods for product/process evaluations.
  • Manage project deliverables, timelines, and budgets.
  • Coordinate R&D efforts with Marketing, Manufacturing, and Quality Assurance regarding products (needle, knives, etc..) feasibility and time frames for product development.
  • Chooses and implements analysis and testing techniques used in the test characterization of materials and coordinates physical testing and evaluation of raw materials and finished products in order to establish comprehensive new product specifications and is also responsible to maintain current product specifications.
  • Evaluates competitors’ products and materials, including patent information, to contribute to the establishment of benchmarks for new products.
  • Investigates and resolves work-in process problems and daily operating variances, troubleshooting for resolution.
  • Translates research discoveries into usable and marketable products.
What you will need (job requirements)
Education: bachelor’s degree in a science and /or E ngineering. Master’s degree in Metallurgist.
Experience: At least 5-10 years of experience in metallurgist with the following desire skills.
 
    • Chemical metallurgists focus on the extraction of metals. They conduct tests on ores and figure out the best method of extraction. They also test metals for signs of corrosion.
    • Physical metallurgists study how a metal behaves in different conditions including in a hot environment or when it's put under stress. They will investigate any signs of weakness.
    • Process metallurgists design metal parts. They are responsible for shaping metal parts through methods such as casting, as well as joining metal parts by welding and soldering them.
 

Other Knowledge, Skills, Abilities or Certifications:

    • Entrepreneurial with ability to be successful in a lean, dispersed organization.
    • Bachelor’s degree in Materials Engineering, required with minimum of 5 years to 10 years of relevant experience, or advanced degree in metallurgy engineering with a minimum of 3 years relevant experience.
    • High level proficiency of technical principles, theories, and design concepts in the field of medical device design
    • Experienced in materials forming technologies: Heat treating, Stamping, Forming and Grinding.
    • Experience with metal working and heat-treating processes and testing a plus
    • Demonstrated use of engineering and scientific principles, mechanical design, and prototyping
    • Ability to lead others from a technical perspective while building a collaborative work environment.
