As an SMT Engineer, you will play a critical role in our manufacturing process by overseeing the Surface Mount Technology assembly operations. You will be responsible for ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of our SMT lines, optimizing processes, troubleshooting issues, and driving continuous improvement initiatives. This position requires strong technical expertise in SMT assembly, exceptional problem-solving skills, and a keen attention to detail.

The SMT Engineer is responsible for the process development, sustaining engineering, quality and workmanship and associated reporting. Responsibilities will focus on maximizing machine utilization and identifying SMT areas of improvement and develop and implement processes, procedures to improve overall manufacturing efficiencies.

The SMT Engineer will work closely with engineering for leading SMT projects and improvement activities, stencil support and reflow fixturing, management and support and process development including printing, placement, reflow development. Key Process Indicators and targets include OEE, DPMO, first pass yield with a focus on process control, issue resolution and quality improvement. This position reports to the Engineering Manager with a dotted line to the General Manager at the Juarez Mexico plant.

This position reports directly to the Engineering Manager, Juarez Mexico site.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field (ex. Chemical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering) completed required.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in Surface Mount Technology Process or related Assembly.
  • IPC-A-610, JEDEC, ISO and related standard knowledge preferred.
  • Minimum 2-3 years electronic engineering experience required, preferably in a contract manufacturing environment and/or EMS industry.
  • Proven and demonstrated experience in Surface Mount Technology (SMT) assembly, with a strong understanding of SMT processes and equipment, and technical background in SMT.
  • Proficiency in programming and operating SMT placement machines, soldering equipment, and related tools.
  • Excellent troubleshooting skills with the ability to diagnose and resolve technical issues quickly and effectively.
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience with lean manufacturing principles and continuous improvement methodologies is a plus.
  • Certification in SMT assembly or related fields is desirable.
  • Equipment knowledge of Panasonic, ASYS/Ersa Printers and BTU Reflow Ovens preferred.
  • Excellent profiling skills with experience with ECD, CAM350 and EPM products
  • Experienced in Statistical control implementation
  • Effective problem solving and organizational skills
  • Effective technical communication skills (written and verbal)
  • Strong interpersonal skills and organization skills with the ability to work within a team environment
  • Demonstrate attention to detail and quality.
  • Strong understanding and command of English and Spanish languages, preferably bilingual, strongly recommended for success in this position.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • SMT Line Optimization: Optimize the performance of SMT equipment to achieve maximum efficiency and output while maintaining high-quality standards.
  • AOI and SPI equipment and programming.
  • Process Improvement: Identify opportunities for process improvements and implement solutions to enhance productivity, reduce cycle times, and minimize waste.
  • Programming and Setup: Develop and optimize SMT machine programs, including stencil design, component placement, and solder paste application.
  • Quality Assurance: Implement rigorous quality control measures to ensure that SMT assemblies meet all specifications and standards.
  • Troubleshooting: Diagnose and resolve equipment malfunctions, solder defects, and other technical issues that may arise during production.
  • Training and Development: Train production staff on SMT processes, equipment operation, and best practices to ensure consistent performance and adherence to quality standards.
  • Documentation: Maintain accurate records of SMT processes, machine settings, and quality control data. Generate reports and documentation as required.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with cross-functional teams, including Production, Supply Chain/Warehouse, Engineering, and Quality Assurance, to support new product introductions, resolve technical challenges, and drive continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Compliance: Ensure compliance with relevant industry standards, regulations, and safety protocols.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES & SPECIFIC TASKS

  • Provide leadership, training, direction, and guidance to SMT technicians/ operators.
  • Reduce/ eliminate Setup and changeover time. Maximize machine utilization and uptime.
  • Identify SMT areas of improvement and provide solutions and alternates.
  • Perform Design for Manufacturability (DFM) feedback to manufacturing engineer to identify critical issues which impact quality, cost, and throughput.
  • Develop new technologies, equipment, tools, processes, materials, and procedures to define, improve manufacturing solutions and efficiencies.
  • Work with Component Engineering to validate AVL conformance to standard supply types, process requirements, lead free process compatibility, MSL. Identify and feedback discrepancies for resolution.
  • Support tape and reel operations.
  • Design and implement stencil, reflow support fixtures and stencil print fixtures.
  • Develop reflow profile, SRT profile (as rework dictates), rework stencils, Pin-in-paste, step, adhesive.
  • Responsible for process and equipment specific training and safety requirements.
  • Lead SMT Efficiency projects and improvement activities.
  • Responsible for stencil, support fixture and reflow fixturing organization, management, and control.
  • Provide cost impact from ECN when applicable on tooling, parts, and process variations
  • Responsible for maintenance and improvement of SMT cycle time, throughput targets and metrics, WIP flow and identification and resolution of capacity constraints.
  • Develop and monitor UCL and LCL for SPC, CpK measurements, DPMO targets and identify additional inspection requirement to maintain high level of quality output and first pass yield.
  • I mplementation of lean manufacturing, 5S and continuous improvement with focus on process control, issue resolution and quality improvement.
  • Determine Root Cause Analysis and perform corrective action through Corrective Action Reporting (CAR).
  • Ensure adherence to IPC-610-D & ISO Procedures.
  • Monitor SMT efficiency and quality and ensure operators are following standard procedures.
  • Responsible for SMT Continuous improvement and weekly review of Rolled Yield reports and respective corrective actions.
  • Attendance at team and customer meetings on a regular and ad-hoc basis as business needs dictate.
  • Other related duties as required.
